Quarter-final battles beckon at the Alpha Bravo Construction British Junior Open

The action intensified on day two of the 2026 Alpha Bravo Construction British Junior Open as quarter-finalists were decided in Birmingham.

At the end of Saturday’s schedule, BU19 top seed Adam Hawal of Egypt set up a last-eight encounter with England’s recently crowned British junior champion [5/8] Dylan Roberts tomorrow lunchtime.

Hawal sauntered past Japan’s [17/32] Shunsaku Kariyazono today in three, while Roberts dropped the first game but recovered well to conquer USA’s [9/16] Collins Hart Robertson 12-14, 11-5, 11-2, 11-2.

Ronnie Hickling, a 9/16 seed, joins his English compatriot Roberts in the last eight whilst victories for France’s fast-rising [3/4] Amir Khaled-Jousselin and Czechia’s [5/8] Martin Stepan also add a European flavour to the BU19 last eight.

India’s three-time BJO champion Anahat Singh encountered little resistance from Egypt’s Malak Elmaraghy in a 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 victory in GU19 round three.

At the other end of the draw, European junior champion Lauren Baltayan of France won 11-8, 11-7, 13-11 against [9/16] Talia Zakaria, recent winner of the US Junior Open and younger sister of world no.11 and former BJO U19 champion Mohamad.

Whilst progress was straightforward again for Egypt’s BU17 top seed Farouk Mohamed, no.2 seed Aryaveer Dewan of India almost found himself two games down before battling back to see off USA’s [9/16] Jayden Oon 8-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-4. Englishman Luke McBride is also in contention after coming through his games unscathed with 3-0 victories in each.

The top eight seeds all reached the GU17 quarter-finals including England’s [5/8] Mariam Eissa, who lives in nearby Kenilworth. The local girl hit back from two games down to defeat Egypt’s [17/32] Maya Mandour 11-13, 5-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-3. She now meets [3/4] seed Charlotte Sze who battled through a tough test against Egyptian [9/16] Rinad Hytham Elmergawy.

Egypt and India will provide all the quarter-finalists in the BU15 in which there was a smattering of minor shocks on Saturday. India’s [9/16] Shresht Iyer toppled American [5/8] Kevin Wu in four games and [17/32] Hamza Waleed Rayan beat fellow Egyptian [3/4] Omar Mohamed in straight games.

Title favourite Layan Moustafa marched into the last eight of the GU15 with an 11-5, 11-5, 11-6 win over [9/16] Nazli Orfi, younger sister of Amina, the world no.3 and four-time BJO title winner. Second seed Vivienne Sze of the USA dropped the opening game but came through safely against Egypt’s [17/32] Talia Hussein.

The top two BU13 seeds, Yahia Waleed Rayan and Adam Ragab of Egypt, remain on course for a final showdown, while USA’s [9/16] Teddy Edwards upset the seedings by knocking out compatriot [5/8] Yiden Chen 11-7, 11-5, 11-9.

The top four seeds remained intact in the GU13 but there was a notable scalp for Singapore’s 9/16 seed Kareena Sashukumar who defeated [5/8] Indian Shanaya Parasrampuria in three to set up a quarter-final with no.1 seed Serein Mohamed of Egypt on Sunday.

All of the top eight seeds will make up Sunday’s quarter-final line-up in the BU11 draw. USA’s [1] Azlan Khan will face namesake [5/8] Fahad Khan of Kuwait.

The opening two rounds of the GU11 took place at Edgbaston Priory Club with top seed Talia Eslam needing two tiebreaks to get past Qatar’s [9/16] Zoe Makaryous. [3/4] Elizabeth Kung of USA perished against Indian [9/16] Akshara Makhija in three games.
