Day Three Roundup : Egyptians dominate with 29 semi-finalists

It was a fruitful quarter finals day in Birmingham for Egyptian juniors as they claimed 29 out of 40 possible semi-final spots – the remaining places were claimed by USA (3), France (2), India (2) and England, Switzerland, Malaysia and Kuwait with one each.

Under-19 top seeds Mohamed Zakaria and Fayrouz Aboelkheir comfortably secured semi final berths after dispatching USA’s Zane Patel  and Malaysia’s Sehveetrraa Kumar, both in straight games.

The second seeds followed suit in notching 3-0 victories to advance to the last four – USA’s Caroline Fouts thwarted an Egyptian clean sweep with triumph over Noor Megahed while England’s last year’s beaten finalist Jonah Bryant moved a step closer to reaching the U19 final again by overcoming USA’s Hollis Robertson, with wins for France’s Melvil Scianamanico and Switzerland’s David Bernet making it four different nationalities in the Boys’ semis.

Anahat Singh, India’s top seed in the Girls’ Under-17, came through a stern test against Egypt’s Ruqayya Salem [5/8] to advance to the last four in the opening match of the day. After sharing the first four games, Singh clinched the fifth 11-8 to earn her place in the semi finals.

The rest of the Girls’ U17s went to seeding, and Singh will take on Egypt’s 3/4 seed Barb Sameh following her 3-0 success over Doyce Lee Ye San of Malaysia. France’s Lauren Baltayan was stretched to the limit in justifying her 3/4 seeding, winning another five-game nailbiter.

It was an Egyptian clean sweep in the Boys’ U17, with 17/32 seed Ahmed Abd Elreheem springing a surprise result as he knocked out his 3/4 seeded  compatriot Seifeldin Refaay.  Fellow countrymen and the top two seeds Youssef Salem and Marwan Asal, who lifted the U15 title in 2023, downed Amir Khaled 3-1 and USA’s 9/16 seed Jack Elriani both 3-0.

Despite a big victory yesterday, Egypt’s Seif Belal El Shal  just missed out on a semi final berth in the Boys’ Under-15s as he went down 3-2 to his compatriot and the 5/8 seed Farouk Mohamed in the final match of the round.

In the Girls’ U15s Egypt’s 5/8 seed Rama El Naggar dumped 3/4 seed Reghan McLaughlin of the USA out with a 3-1 success.

The Egyptians swept the board in the Boys’ Under-13s, with all the matches going to seeding. Top seed Malek Helmy downed Muhammad Sohail Adnann  from Pakistan in straight games, while second seed Omar Mohamed overturned a 2-1 deficit to edge fellow countryman Aly Taleb [5/8] 3-2.

In the Girls U13, where an Egyptian champion is guaranteed, USA’s top seed Vivienne Sze battled back from two games down to avoid defeat against Aadya Budhia of India.

There were some big upsets in the Under-11s, with the top two Boys’ seeds knocked out and the Girls’ second seed beaten.
