Day ONE : Good day for the seeds on a busy opening

Action gets under way today at four venues across Birmingham, with over 600 competitors starting their quest for the prestigious BJO titles.

British Junior Open 2024 : Wed 3rd Jan, Day ONE

There were 482 matches across 22 courts at four venues today,
with two rounds of play in most of the older age groups,
so we’ll cover what we can but don’t expect too much !

Day One Update : a handful of minor and G13 upsets …

There were no significant upsets in the morning and afternoon sessions, although with most of the matches being early rounds in the events with larger entries, few of the top seeds took to court before the evening. The handful of early seeding upsets saw some 33/64 and a few 17/32 seeds beaten.

The G13 event saw the most seeding disruption, with four of the top eight seeds failing to make the last sixteen.

In the evening session was all Girls all the way at EPC with U17, U15 then U19 last 32s. At the University it was Boys U19 all the way from 18.00 to close.

There were a host more 17/32 seeds losing out in the evening session, but apart from the G13 just four where a top 16 seed was beaten :

There were some tense matches in the day though, mostly in the Girls’ events at Edgbaston, with U17 top seed Anahat Singh tested despite a three-nil wil, and U17 3/4 seed Lauran Baltayan taken the distance.
